About Abensio and How We Research

Abensio is an educational resource and comparison hub for US HR and finance teams working on salary budgeting, headcount planning, and workforce compensation software.

What we cover and why

The topics here are salary budget construction, headcount and scenario planning, compensation planning and merit cycles, and payroll tax and benefits modeling. We chose this scope because these four things feed the same number. A salary budget is only as good as the headcount plan behind it, the merit cycle that changes it, and the tax and benefits layers that load on top.

Covering them separately would make each page easier to write and less useful to read. So the site is organised as one chain, and each chapter links to the next.

Where each chapter sits in the chain
Chapter Feeds into
Salary budgeting guide What the money has to cover Headcount plan
Headcount & scenario planning How many roles, under which scenario Merit cycle
Compensation planning & merit cycles What each change costs to run Payroll layer
Payroll tax & benefits cost modeling What loads on top of base Total budget

Research starts at the desk, not in the brochure. We read vendor documentation and current comparison material, then describe each platform by the planning problem it solves.

How we research workforce planning tools

We read the vendors' own product documentation and current comparison material, then describe each platform in terms of the planning problem it addresses. We state what a product is built for, not what its marketing claims, and we note when a product page was updated.

Workforce planning platform notes

What a platform is built for

Visier is covered as a tool for connecting workforce plans to financial plans and optimizing labor spend. PlanGuru is covered for employee-level labor forecasting with payroll tax modeling. Those two sentences are the whole editorial method: name the planning job, name the platform that does it, and leave the adjectives out.

How comparisons stay current

Comparisons on this site are editorial. We don't accept payment for placement, and no platform is described as a best choice in general terms, because the right tool depends on headcount, planning cycle, and who needs access. Product pages for the platforms covered were updated in 2026, and we refresh comparisons as capabilities change. When a tool adds or drops something that affects fit, the entry changes.

Where a spreadsheet is genuinely sufficient, we say so.

Who writes this

Written for the person building the budget

The material is written for practitioners: HR leaders, finance analysts, compensation teams, and small business owners who need to understand what a hire costs. We assume you know payroll basics. We don't assume you've built a multi-scenario workforce plan before, and we don't write as if you have.

Where a spreadsheet is genuinely sufficient, we say so, because recommending software for every situation would make the comparisons worthless. That single rule shapes most of the decisions on this site — including the ones that cost us an easy recommendation.

What we don't do

We don't provide payroll processing, tax filing, legal advice, or compensation consulting. We don't publish salary benchmarks for specific roles, because we don't have verified data to support them. We don't claim certifications or partnerships we haven't established.

What we do is explain how salary budgeting and workforce planning work and compare the tools that support them, factually and in plain language. If a page on this site can't point to the documentation behind a claim, the claim comes out.

Questions we get asked

Two answers that explain most of what this site is and isn't. If yours isn't here, the contact page is the next stop.

Does Abensio sell software or consulting?

No. The site is an educational resource and comparison hub. We don't process payroll, file taxes, or provide compensation consulting. Everything published here is written to help you understand a budgeting or planning decision and compare the platforms that support it.

How do you decide which platforms to cover?

We cover platforms relevant to salary budgeting, headcount planning, and compensation planning for US teams, based on their published product documentation and current comparison material. If a platform's documentation stops supporting the entry, the entry gets revised or removed rather than left standing.
